SPRINGFIELD — Jurors in a murder case in Hampden Superior Court failed to return a verdict on their first day of deliberations Tuesday.

The panel is mulling the fate of Brenda Mayhew, a Three Rivers woman accused of fatally stabbing her friend in the friend’s Palmer home on Feb. 8, 2021.

The jury began deliberating just before 9:30 a.m. after three weeks of testimony and arguments. Prosecutors say Mayhew stabbed Wilson to death after she took Mayhew in after a hospitalization over mental health concerns. Mayhew had been carrying around a large, military-style knife because she had unfounded concerns people were following her, according to Hampden Assistant District Attorney Dana Parsons.
