ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Atlanta police are addressing continuing violence at the site of the controversial future Atlanta Public Safety Training Center.

Several critics of the project have been arrested in connection to disruptive acts that police said included setting construction equipment and police vehicles on fire and chaining themselves to the equipment.

On Tuesday, construction equipment belonging to a training center contractor was set ablaze near Piedmont Fayette Hospital, investigators said.

“The investigation is in its early stages. I don’t want to speak for our [law enforcement] partners, but we look at the stories you’ve [media] reported on and I think we have a very strong suspicion this is likely connected and we will let the facts take us where they take us,” Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said.

In late March, two transgender women climbed a 250-foot tall construction crane on 11th Street demanding that the contractor cut ties with the project.
