Ohio bill would strengthen door standards in schools [Video]

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVG) – A new proposal from state lawmakers would strengthen door standards in Ohio’s schools in an effort to improve school safety.

The Ohio Childhood Safety Act aims to make Ohio’s roughly 3,100 schools more like hospitals when it comes to doors.

It would implement new standards for alarmed locks, door hinges, and seals to also prevent fires from spreading. It would require interior and exterior doors to be designed to resist forced entry, making it easy to leave and hard to get in.

They’d have to be inspected and maintained regularly.

An independent analysis of the bill said it’s uncertain how many schools would be affected. The bill’s sponsor estimates around a quarter of Ohio schools are already in compliance, including ones built in the last decade, but older buildings aren’t.
