Okaloosa County NAACP to host town hall with Senior Airman Roger Fortsons family [Video]

FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. (WALA) -This Okaloosa County deputy involved shooting that left active duty Senior Airman Roger Fortson dead in his apartment continues to cause outrage throughout the Fort Walton Beach community almost two months later.

“We were in grief with the mother and with the family. So we’ve gone through some stages of shock, grief and even anger,” said Sabu Williams, President of the Okaloosa County NAACP. “There’s been anger at the process of what we saw happen.”

The shooting happened when a sheriff’s deputy responded to Fortson’s apartment complex for a disturbance call. Body camera video shows Fortson answer the door with a gun in his hand, but he never raises it. The officer shot Fortson several times saying he felt threatened by the gun. The shooting gained national attention and local NAACP leaders hope it will lead to change.
