Oregon State Police shot at Amber Alert suspect in self-defense, DA says [Video]

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Two Oregon State Police officers were found “justified” for shooting at an Amber Alert and wanted murder suspect during a police chase on Interstate 5 in April, according to the Linn County District Attorney’s Office.

After reviewing the shooting, District Attorney Doug Marteeny found the officers were shooting at 39-year-old Elias Huizar in self-defense, as first reported by The Oregonian/OregonLive.

In a June 6 memo obtained by KOIN 6 News, Marteeny wrote to the lead detective on the case, that the use of deadly force by Superintendent Casey Codding and Sergeant Nickodemus Johnson was legally justified, noting, “the evidence that leads to this conclusion is overwhelming. Sgt. Johnson and Supt. Codding shot at Elias Huizar in self-defense and in defense of others.”
