TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – Picacho Peak state park closed on Saturday, June 8 after a civilian plane out of Oro Valley collided with the mountain.

The Pinal County Sheriff’s Department says an early-morning hiker reported the aircraft crashing near the top of the peak.

68-year-old James Galvin from Oro Valley, the pilot and only occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead when discovered.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) confirmed the aircraft was a single-engine Rans S-12XL Airaile, a kit plane designed to be built at home by hobbyist pilots.

Recovery efforts are underway. An NTSB investigator is expected to arrive Saturday night to thoroughly examine and document the wreckage, before relocating it for further examination.
