Today, the Pennsylvania House passed a bill that keeps access to birth control affordable through insurance policies.
H.B. 1140 received bipartisan support on the house floor, with a 133-69 vote in favor.
The bill requires private and government insurance policies to offer contraceptives with no cost sharing fees.
Access to birth control has become a national conversation as some states moved to limit the medical area.
“So contraceptives are used for many purposes, not just to prevent unplanned pregnancies. Endometriosis, PCOS, migraines— these are all medical conditions for which a doctor would prescribe contraceptives to their patient,” said Leanne Krueger, (D-161), the bill’s sponsor. “And this bill makes sure that people can get access to that medication for whatever reason they are requesting it.”
Krueger emphasized that there are no state specific laws protecting birth control access in Pennsylvania.
