Pa. man falls to his death down elevator shaft [Video]

A 71-year-old man from Erie County died on Tuesday after falling two stories down an elevator shaft.

The incident took place at a little before 4 p.m. at Andy’s Equipment Exchange in Erie, according to reports from YourErie.com and the Erie Times-News.

The victim, whose identity has not been released yet pending family notification, was a longtime employee at that business. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:04 p.m. The cause of death was multiple blunt force trauma due to an accident.

Officials said the man had been waiting to board the elevator on the building’s second floor.

“He opened the door to the elevator, assuming it was there, and it wasn’t,” Deputy Erie County Coroner John Maloney said to the Erie Times-News. The elevator was on the third floor when he fell.
