PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — A pedestrian was killed after being hit by a car on the Vine Street Expressway (I-676) in Center City Philadelphia on Wednesday morning.

The crash happened around 4:20 a.m. in the westbound lanes between the exits for Broad Street and the Ben Franklin Parkway.

According to Pennsylvania state police, the driver told investigators that the male victim walked from the right shoulder and into the left lane, directly in front of the vehicle.

The male was thrown onto the right shoulder where he was later pronounced dead. The driver stopped at the scene.

Police say the damage to the car was consistent with the driver’s statement, and the driver was not impaired.

Investigators are working to learn the identity of the man who was killed.

The investigation led to lane closures that caused major backups during the morning commute. The highway has since reopened.
