Phoenix Sky Harbor holds heat safety fair for workers [Video]

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Phoenix had a 31-day streak of record heat last summer.

A new city ordinance ensures workers for city contractors have access to water, rest, shade and safety training.

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport says Wednesday’s heat safety fair was planned before the city unanimously passed the rule last month.

It all comes almost a year after Phoenix airport workers filed complaints about the lack of water and medical care during the extreme summer temperatures last year.

“Heat is the most dangerous weather across the country, not only here in Arizona but the U.S. Here in Arizona, we do see on average 3,000 heat-related emergency room visits,” said Ryan Worley, a National Weather Service meteorologist.

Heat is often referred to as a silent killer and for airport employees working outdoors, is a real threat.
