Platte County voters aim to tackle youth homelessness and mental health issues next election [Video]

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) -Thousands of people in Platte County say this area is failing many children in quality housing, keeping their mental health strong, and other issues that put kids in danger. In the upcoming election they hope to change that.

These days Sherry Rejba is always checking on how her kids are feeling mentally. But having counselors at school has been a tremendous help.

“There needs to be more programs in the schools that allow kids to come to them and express themselves,” Rejba argued. “My son goes to counseling, and he feels great when he does it.”

Unfortunately, many kids in Platte County aren’t getting those same resources. Leaving many children in danger.

“In Platte County there’s more children reporting they’re at risk of suicide than the state average,” Tom Petrizzo, President and CEO of Beacon Mental Health, said. “In fact, it’s 30% higher than the Missouri State average for teenagers.”
