Prescription Pitfalls – Healing from Opioids: Beyond Addiction.

Welcome to our 4th episode in our ongoing series on opioids, where we continue the exploration of opioids as they ensnare countless chronic illness patients. I am your host, Trish. The procedural opioid prescription is treacherous terrain that led me down the path of opioid use disorder in my journey with chronic pain conditions. Gradually, I became dependent and tolerant, with a set of personal struggles and societal challenges. I share candidly about the profound impact of opioid misuse on my life.

This impact was extended to my cognitive abilities, which was characterized by mood swings, poor sleeping habits, irritability, bursts of anger, and a lack of inhibition. On the other end, my decision-making was hampered, and I was relegating personal responsibilities. Navigating the devastating episodes took a toll on immediate family relationships. I survived the onslaught because of my strong support system. I was going down a road that spells injury, damage, and fatality. My people enveloped me with compassion. I was fiercely protected, held closely, and shown compassion.

Surviving these harrowing events was by God’s grace. These lifelong relationships remain my anchor in life, even in the darkest of moments. My call to caregivers, medical practitioners, and well-wishers is to cultivate awareness on ‘Opioid Use Disorder.’ Let us extend compassion, and support to those grappling with opioid use disorder. And, in a strong way, let us shun stigmatization in opioid use disorder. This way, many will have the courage to acknowledge their struggle with opioids and seek support. I urge those in need to seek help through county referral hospitals, acknowledging the pivotal role of government initiatives like NACADA in bolstering rehabilitation services. I advocate for an ecosystem approach to managing the opioid crisis, emphasizing the critical importance of balanced awareness regarding the benefits and risks of opioids in pain management. I am an opioid survivor!
