Professionals discuss how cicada season could affect children with noise sensitivity [Video]

JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) -As Cicada season approaches, some parents may wonder what they can do to help their children with special needs cope with the noise.

Owner of Creative Kids’ Therapy and Occupational therapist Angela Culver is no stranger to helping kids with autism.

“It can impact their life in different ways it can be social it can be through the way they express themselves,” says Culver.

She explained that noise sensitivity can be a major issue for kids with autism and can affect their social interactions and self-expression.

“The noise that a cicada makes will probably affect some children who have some noise sensitivity and impair their ability to be outside,” says Culver.

The noise of cicadas can be particularly disruptive for them.

Speech-language Pathologist at Jumping Jellybeans Lindy Gage noted that some children may enjoy the sound of cicadas, while others may find it overwhelming.
