Rapidly intensifying hurricanes slash time to prepare and evacuate [Video]

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – Hurricane experts warn you might have less time to prepare for storms this season because of the potential hurricanes that are expected to rapidly intensify.

Come Saturday (June 1), the Gulf South turns its attention to the official start of hurricane season. The City of New Orleans held a multi-agency press conference to detail the preparations underway for residents and visitors.

“We are better prepared for hurricanes than we ever have been, and we need to be because this season appears to be busy,” said Collin Arnold, the city’s homeland security and emergency preparedness director.

Season Outlook

This year, the National Weather Service says the season comes with an 85% chance of “above normal” activity, warning that now is not the time to get complacent.

“We had the fourth most active hurricane season on record last year and we were spared,” said Arnold.
