Rivers and Rangers: Water Safety Training in Nyika National Park

This week, Peace Parks TV is immersed in crucial water safety training happening in Nyika National Park. With the rainy season filling the rivers, 13 newly recruited community scouts, responsible for combating poaching in the park, are mastering vital skills to navigate these waters safely. Under the expert guidance of Peace Parks Foundation’s Norman English, and Ellington Alifeyo, the scouts are learning how to cross rivers and respond to currents, ensuring they are equipped to protect the park’s wildlife safely and effectively.

Investing in both ranger safety and employment is paramount, and through a landmark co-management agreement with the Government of Malawi, Peace Parks is not only safeguarding these vital ecosystems but also creating sustainable livelihoods for local people. This collaborative effort underscores the power of partnerships in securing a future where nature thrives, communities and tourism flourish, and wildlife remains protected. We wish the new scouts all the best as they safely embark on their ranger adventures in Nyika National Park! Stay tuned to Peace Parks TV for more on the ground action.

We would like to thank the Department of National Parks and Wildlife for helping to build this awesome team of community scouts, and the @COmON Foundation for their financial support of the project.
