SCSO reminds parents about pool safety during summer months [Video]

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – Summer break is in full swing for students across the Mid-South, and families are spending their days at the pool.

With two recent near-drowning incidents, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office is reminding everyone about swim safety.

The incidents occurred in Lakeland and Southeast Shelby County. The sheriff’s office reports that the three and four-year-olds involved were both unresponsive when first responders arrived at each scene.

SCSO says those children are okay, but this is an important reminder for parents to have an action plan.

”Some of these spaces and places children are going to be around, there are no lifeguards. So we as parents, we as adults, have to understand that when there are no lifeguards present, we are the lifeguards,” said Chief Deputy Anthony Buckner. “So we have the responsibility of making sure we provide a safe environment for these children.”
