Share the road, keep motorcyclists safe [Video]

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – According to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, motorcycles make up 7% of registered vehicles in the state but account for 17% of total fatalities.

This alarming trend peaks during the Sturgis Rally, with 70% of total motorcycle deaths occurring in July, August, and September. As the roads fill with more and more motorcycles in preparation for the rally, AAA South Dakota is urging everybody to drive responsibly and “share the road.”

“For car drivers, being aware of motorcyclists they are out there now, a lot more people are out riding their bikes on the roads, so you just have to be aware and always looking out for them; give them extra space; don’t ride up too close to them; give them plenty of room,” said Shawn Steward, the spokesman for AAA South Dakota.
