Shelby County homeowners say they dont want inmate rehabilitation center in their neighborhood [Video]

SHELBY COUNTY, Ala. (WBRC) – Homeowners in Shelby County will get to vote on a zoning ordinance this summer. The move follows some opposition to a proposed inmate rehabilitation facility.

The zoning vote will affect the area between Harpersville and Wilsonville.

Property Owner Randy Walker told WBRC that they are no longer considering housing these inmates in the county. It’s something that homeowner Leigh Hunt and others were hoping to stop.

Back in February, we learned the group LifeLink Career Resource Center and Breakaway Pointe developed plans and designs for a rehab center for state prisoners in the area.

Hunt took matters into her own hands and asked the probate court for a zoning protection election.

“We sent out petitions to those people who are both landowners and residents and registered to vote in the Harpursville, Vincent beat which is where this is located.”
