TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) – Tupelo Fire Marshal Tyler Scott said fireworks account for 10,000 accidents a year, and he doesn’t want you to be one of them.

Scott says about 10 percent of people report eye injuries during this time of the year, all because of fireworks.

Fireworks are classified as explosives and can explode at any given moment depending on how old it is and who made it.

They must be handled with caution.

And if you get burned, Scott shared what to do.

“Anytime you get a burn, obviously, you want to keep that burn cool,” Scott said. “In a firework situation, you want to make sure the scene is safe before you start doing anything and to call 911 to let the professionals come and assist you.”

Scott adds that when using fireworks you have to have a healthy respect for them.

Remember, fireworks start an average of 19,000 house fires each year.

Scott also recommends that only professionals do fireworks shows.
