Sight+SoundBites: Introducing StreetLab – Improving Functional Outcomes in Low Vision Rehabilitation

José-Alain Sahel, MD, Clive D’Souza, PhD, MS, and Rakié Cham, PhD speak about the Street Lab and Driving Simulator at the Mercy Pavilion Vision Institute.

Dr. José-Alain Sahel is the Chair and Distinguished Professor of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, director of the UPMC Eye Center, and the Eye & Ear Foundation Endowed Chair of Ophthalmology. Dr. Sahel, who was born in Algeria, studied medicine at University Denis Diderot, Paris VII, and Ophthalmology at University Louis Pasteur Strasbourg University. He received his medical degree with a Medal of the Faculty of Paris and obtained his specialty certification in ophthalmology. He completed a residency in Ophthalmology at the Louis Pasteur University Hospital in Strasbourg. He also was a research fellow at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and a visiting scholar in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at Harvard University. Dr. Sahel founded and directed from 2008 to 2020 the Vision Institute in Paris and currently an exceptional class professor at the Sorbonne’s medical school.

Dr. D’Souza is an Assistant Professor and researcher in the Department of Rehabilitation Science and Technology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. His academic training is in human factors engineering and his research focuses on accessible transportation in which he engages people with disabilities, young and old, in studies investigating the environmental and technological barriers to transportation that prevent them from safely and independently traveling in their communities, and on developing new methods and measures to evaluate and improve the usability of emerging transportation technologies.

Dr. Cham is a researcher and Full Professor in the Departments of Bioengineering, Ophthalmology and Physical Therapy at the University of Pittsburgh. She is a bioengineer by training and her research is motivated by a deep interest in making an impact in society by improving health outcomes. Dr. Cham is focused on improving workplace accessibility to workers with low vision. Together with Dr. Sahel, Dr. Cham co-leads the StreetLab facility within the Department of Ophthalmology.
