SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – A Springfield Citizens Commission finalized a recommendation to place a potential tax measure on the November ballot.

A 3/4-cent sales tax for city employee pensions will expire soon. The commission proposed a replacement. It devotes one-fourth (1/4) of the tax money to public safety, including retaining police and firefighters. The remaining portion of the sales tax will fund a program called SPRING. That stands for Safety, Public initiatives, Recreation, and Investing in the Next Generation.

“Great cities are always intentional,” said commissioner member Tom Prater. “They’re not by accident. And we hope this will be a step that moves this over the next ten years to improving the quality of life in Springfield.”

The commission will present the report to the Springfield City Council on July 2.
