Springfield Police Captain offering peer-to-peer counseling for fellow officers [Video]

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) – One week ago today, a Springfield police officer was shot in the face and leg on his way to work, sending shockwaves throughout the city.

With police facing dangers like this daily, we’re learning how fellow officers are helping each other cope with this reality.

Western Mass News spent Wednesday morning at the Springfield Police Department to get answers.

Springfield Police Captain David Kane has been an officer for decades, but in recent years, he’s added another role to his resume, offering peer to peer support.

Kane told us, “An average police officer in this country experiences close to 200 critical incidents throughout their career. Whereas the average person every citizen experiences maybe 2-3. We knew that we needed to put something into place to help our fellow officers cope with traumatic situations that we may encounter as police officers.”
