St. Tammany Parish officials urge early preparations for summer storm season [Video]

COVINGTON, La. (WVUE) — St. Tammany Parish emergency operations officials said Monday (June 10) they are reviewing their hurricane preparation plans and urged residents to do the same.

It has been nearly three years since St. Tammany residents were impacted by a storm and parish leaders want everyone to be prepared this summer just in case.

Parish president Mike Cooper said evacuations could be ordered in the event of a hurricane, depending on its intensity and direction. Cooper said the southern part of the parish is especially vulnerable.

“The biggest concern is wind and rain and storm surge,” he said. “The wind could affect trees, taking roofs off houses. And rain makes our rivers rise and could cause severe flooding.”

Cooper says flooding could be especially bad if there is a storm surge in Lake Pontchartrain.
