Suburban nurse who stole morphine from patients sentenced [Video]

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A suburban Chicago nurse will serve two years in federal prison after she was convicted of secretly stealing morphine from her patients and replacing it with another substance.

Officials with the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Northern District of Illinois said Sarah Diamond, of Woodstock, was the assistant director of nursing at a medical rehabilitation center in Crystal Lake.

In the summer of 2021, officials said Diamond “removed morphine from bottles that had been prescribed to at least five patients to manage their pain.”

The 31-year-old nurse was accused of replacing the morphine with what was described as a “diluted substance” — and keeping the morphine for her own personal use.

Prosecutors said Diamond acted with “reckless disregard and extreme indifference” concerning the risk that her actions placed patients under.
