Supreme Court gives domestic violence victims a win [Video]

TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – There was a large sigh of relief at Emerge! Center Against Domestic Abuse in Tucson on Friday, June 21.

The United States Supreme Court ruled 8-1 that people charged with domestic violence may not possess a gun while their case is being adjudicated.

It reverses a 5th Circuit Appeals Court decision which said that withholding a weapon violates the defendant’s Second Amendment rights.

“We were absolutely ecstatic,” said Ed Sakwa, the CEO of Emerge! “Texts, emails, were flying all over the place as people were trying to share the good news.”

It’s good news because Emerge! has been sitting on pins and needles since SCOTUS took up the case.

If the Supreme Court had upheld it, Emerge@ knew what the eventual result would be — more death.

“The reality is, there is a 500% increase in the risk of being killed if a domestic abuse situation occurs with a gun, with firearms involved,” Sakwa said.
