Swimming and water safety tips ahead of summer [Video]

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – The weather is heating up and many of you are already looking for ways to beat the heat.

Swimming and being near water is of course a popular way to do just that.

According to the CDC, drowning is the number one cause of death for children 1-4 years old in the U.S.

It’s important to follow safety guidelines while out with your family.

In just the month of May, there have been two drowning deaths and two more cases of children nearly drowning.

“It’s just tragic. And, once again, it’s making safety a habit by getting in a vehicle and putting your seatbelt on every time you go near the water.”

Lisa Valadie with the Madison Fire Department says safety should be everyone’s #1 priority when near water.
