SEATTLE — It’s been almost four years since a Washington family suffered devastating loss in an Okanogan County wildfire, but they have made big strides in their recovery, and welcomed a new addition.

Jacob and Jamie Hyland lost their firstborn son, Uri, in the devastating Cold Springs wildfire of 2020.  Jamie also lost her unborn baby and the ability to carry future biological children.

The couple’s grief was unimaginable, but as their physical injuries healed, they were determined to grow their family. They turned to surrogacy, but endured at least five failed attempts before finally finding success in 2023.

“Every time it failed, it was just like, my cup was already really, really, empty,” Jacob said. “[It] just felt like it had even more holes in it.”
