Tips for staying safe when setting off or watching fireworks [Video]

ROCK HILL, S.C. (WBTV) – A trauma doctor speaks out with safety tips for what she said is their busiest holiday of the year.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported there were eight deaths and nearly 10 thousand injuries related to fireworks in 2023 alone.

Piedmont Medical Center Trauma Unite Nurse Practitioner Carson White said, “When people are playing with fireworks, of course, we want you to have fun, we want you to be safe.”

She said the biggest injuries that they see during the 4th of July festivities are burns and blasts.

“Burns to the face to the neck to the chest, and a lot of missing fingers. Maybe missing hands. [It] can be as bad as missing limbs,” White said.

It is not the way anyone wants to celebrate independence, but White said many people will be at their hospital on the 4th.
