Torches, bottled water, non-perishable food, baby supplies and a first aid kit are just some of the items ministers want Brits to have prepared in case of emergencies.

It comes as Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said Britain had ‘some of its most dangerous years ahead’ last week, describing the threat of authoritarian states, global immigration and AI.

And the UK is continuing to feel the effects of severe weather, including flooding, power cuts, heatwaves and droughts. 

Now, Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden is set to advise people to make contingency plans for dealing with potential emergencies to help build ‘national resilience’ and ease pressure on emergency services when they happen.
