Total solar eclipse: How to safely enjoy the big event [Video]

Safety preparations don’t end with eclipse glasses. Here’s what you should know before heading out.

MAINE, USA — It’s almost here: the Great American Eclipse over Maine on Monday.

Maine is positioned in one of the best spots in the country to watch the eclipse, as it’s in the path of totality, and the latest forecast is looking promising with no cloud coverage.

An estimated 10,000 to 40,000 people will travel to Maine for the eclipse.

Last week during a press conference at the University of Maine’s Versant Power Astronomy Center, Gov. Janet Mills urged both locals and those traveling to the state to view the eclipse to prepare early and use common sense.

Wear ISO-certified eclipse glasses. Looking directly at the sun can cause permanent eye damage, and not just any glasses will provide the same protection. Do not drive while wearing eclipse glasses, and do not drive distracted during the eclipse.
