ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The University of New Mexico is dishing out over $300,000 to settle a lawsuit over the suicide of a former Lobo football player. The lawsuit, filed by the parents of Nahje Flowers in 2020, accused coaching staff of not properly supervising the 21-year-old and making him continue to play football after he sustained repeated head injuries. The lawsuit claims that caused his mental health to decline.

In the weeks leading up to his suicide, Flowers was put on anti-depressants, was seeking counseling for his depression, and complained of constant pain. The family also faulted NCAA policies.

In the end, the university settled with Flowers’ family for $325,000.
