Volkswagen is recalling more than 79,000 of its ID.4 electric SUVs over this software defect.

Affected vehicles include 79,953 2021-2023 Volkswagen ID.4 electric SUVs that have a software issue causing the instrument panel to not boot at all or spontaneously reset, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration.

This software malfunction could increase the risk of a crash.

No injuries have been reported as of Thursday in connection to the recall, according to the NHTSA.

Volkswagen said it would begin notifying owners about the recall by mail starting July 12, 2024.

Owners can then take their affected vehicles to their local dealers, where the dealers will update the software for free.

Anyone with further questions can contact Volkswagen at 800-893-5298 (Volkswagen’s number for this recall is 919A), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit the NHTSA website to check your vehicle identification number and learn more.
