Walker County Sheriffs Office looking to hire new school resource officer [Video]

WALKER COUNTY, Ala. (WBRC) – The Walker County Sheriff’s Office is hiring a new school resource officer. A recent retirement has left one position open at a middle school.

The program began in 2019 when the Sheriff’s Office and the Board of Education partnered together. Sheriff Nick Smith says the department employs nine SROs across the county. Some of them recently went to this year’s Alabama Association of School Resource Officers conference to continue their training and education. The sheriff says there are opportunities to grow in this position. You can also become a certified DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) instructor.

Sheriff Smith says though everyone prays nothing awful happens at their school, you never know so you must be prepared with an officer on campus ready to jump into action.

“We just want somebody who obviously has a good temperament with children, who cares about their community, who want to be a part of the community,” said Sheriff Smith. …
