Weekend drowning victims in Fresno County didnt know how to swim, deputies say [Video]

FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – It was a dangerous weekend on the water for swimmers across Fresno County.

Fresno County Sheriff’s deputies responded to two different drownings across county waterways, where neither victim knew how to swim.

“We always tell people, if you’re not an experienced swimmer, you don’t know how to swim at all. Just stay out of the water,” Fresno County Sheriff Public Information Officer Tony Botti said.

He says one took place on Friday at the Skaggs Bridge Park along the San Joaquin River killing 24-year-old Ricardo Perez Diaz from Madera. Botti says he was not wearing a life jacket and was standing in knee-deep water before he drowned.

“And when he took a step, it was like falling off of a cliff. So when you don’t know how to swim, you’re obviously going to panic you can’t feel anything beneath your feet,” he said.
