PLEASANT HILL, Iowa – Pleasant Hill Police Department officers are having a hoot after receiving recognition from PETA for an owl rescue last month.

On April 27, officers Mason Roberts and Nate King were surveying tornado damage at Oakwood Cemetery. During that time a good Samaritan alerted the pair to a young injured owl, sitting on a downed tree branch, with an injured wing.

Roberts says that’s when he called animal control.

The owlet, named Hooter, was taken to the Iowa Bird Rehabilitation Center where he’s expected to make a full recovery.

On Tuesday, PETA awarded the officers with its Compassionate Police Department accommodation.

As for Hooter, he’s expected to be released back into nature in a couple of months.
