SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – As a result of intense rainfall last week, many South Dakota residents experienced flooding in their homes.

You might think that you already have flood insurance through your residential insurance, however, this is not the case.

Here is some information you should know.

According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), flood insurance is not covered through a regular homeowners policy or commercial property policy.

You can get flood insurance through FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program, or you may be able to get insurance through the company that provided you your home insurance.

Paul Van Engelenhoven, a local agent broker for Hammerstone Insurance, says you should look for a certain number when getting annual flood insurance.

“As far as premiums go, they’re probably starting $5-$600 a year and go up” dip to white “it’s all dictated on the flood zone and the amount of insurance that they need.”
