WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Just in time for summer – there is a new COVID variant spreading. It’s called “FLiRT,” officially known as KP.2.

The Centers For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said KP.2 is part of the Omicron family and appears to have overtaken the dominant winter variant, known as JN.1.

Symptoms are similar to previous strains of COVID-19, including sore throat, cough, fatigue, congestion, runny nose, headache, muscle aches, fever, chills and difficulty breathing.

“We’re seeing more than we were earlier in the spring, but fortunately, the severity as far as people coming into the hospital or people dying, that’s remained very low. So people are keeping an eye on it, but thus far it does not look like it’s going to result in more severe disease than in the past,” said Dr. Glenn Wortmann, chief of infectious diseases at MedStar Washington Hospital Center.
