San Diegans will want to pause and look up on April 8, 2024, (but not without their safety glasses). A total solar eclipse will darken a strip of North America for the last time in 20 years, and San Diego will get to experience part of it.

The eclipse will first darken Mexico as the moon crosses in front of the sun in perfect alignment with the Earth. Then, it’ll cross into the United States through Texas creating a path of darkness northeast to Maine. For other contiguous states not in the “path of totality,” like San Diego, a partial solar eclipse will still be visible.

San Diego County will be one of the best places in California to experience the event. Another total solar eclipse won’t be visible from the contiguous U.S. until Aug. 23, 2044.
