WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) – The now-closed Park Elementary School is one step closer to becoming the city of Wichita’s largest homeless shelter.
Tuesday morning the Wichita City Council voted to buy the building that was formerly Park Elementary School from Wichita Public School for only one dollar. Last Thursday the board of education approved the sale of Park Elementary so the city can turn it into a planned multi-agency center. It says this is the fiscally responsible way to use taxpayers’ dollars.
City council member Brandon Johnson says this could be a game changer for helping people facing homelessness in the city.
“This is a really big issue. It’s an issue nationwide but being the biggest city in Kansas we want to take the steps necessary to show that leadership and address this in the best way possible,” Johnson said.
