With heat wave on Kansas Citys horizon, advocates call for issuance of Hot Car Rule [Video]

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – With a major heat wave on Kansas City’s horizon, advocates have called on federal officials to finally issue their Hot Car Rule.

On Thursday, June 20, Kids and Car Safety says it plans to discuss the Federal Hot Car rule with members of Congress, safety advocates and families of hot car victims.

Advocates said the rule has unacceptably been delayed as it missed the crucial Nov. 2023 deadline mandated in the bipartisan legislation, Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.

Once the rule has been finalized, the organization indicated that the rule will require available and affordable technology in all new cars to stop hot car deaths.

According to Kids and Car Safety, at least 1,085 children have died in hot cars since 1990. Already in 2024, two deaths have been recorded. A chilling visual display of 1,085 infant onesies is planned to represent those who have lost their lives in hot vehicles.
