Woman charged in Widowmaker tree crash that killed 4 granted bond [Video]

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – A 26-year-old James Island woman charged in a deadly November 2023 crash that killed four people was granted bond Thursday after it was initially denied.

Brittney Nicole Roper was granted a $50,000 bond and will be required to wear an alcohol-monitoring ankle monitor, the Ninth Circuit Solicitor’s Office said.

Jail records show Roper is facing four counts of felony DUI resulting in death and four counts of reckless homicide caused by vehicle injury. Judge Amanda Haselden initially denied bond for Roper at a Jan. 25 bond hearing.

Judge Bentley Price reversed that decision Thursday.

Roper was charged in connection with a Nov. 18, 2023, crash on Riverland Drive on James Island that resulted in the deaths of four passengers with her at the time of the crash.
