Years-long construction for new diverging diamond interchange along Powers begins Monday [Video]

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – A major construction project at one of Colorado Springs’ busiest intersections is expected to begin Monday.

CDOT will start construction to replace the existing Powers Boulevard and Airport Road intersection, a busy area with Peterson Space Force Base and COS Airport traffic, with a diverging diamond interchange. The project will be next to the highway with minor traffic impacts during the first year of construction.

A diverging diamond interchange (DDI) is when motorists follow their lane to cross over to the opposite side of the road, which CDOT says can improve congestion and safety. Two other DDIs in the city include Powers/Research and Fillmore/I-25.

“There’s always going to be road construction. We live in Colorado where the weather breaks down the roads that we have, so we have to continually improve and maintain the roadways,” said Project Engineer Wayne Pittman.
