Couple opens new Buckhead coffee shop with access for those that are disabled in mind [Video]

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – The first thing you notice upon entering Mend Coffee in Buckhead is it doesn’t look like most coffee shops.

“We wanted to feel light, bright and airy,” said co-owner and CEO Jay Wolf. “Coffee is the gateway. Coffee is sort of the beginning.”

For Jay and his wife, Katherine, their new beginning happened 16 years ago.

“I had a massive stroke as a 26-year-old,” Katherine said.

The stroke leaves much of the right side of her face paralyzed, she struggles to use her right arm and moves with the aid of a walker.

Ten years ago, they founded the nonprofit Hope Heals, which helps people find joy even after tragedy and attempts to create spaces for people with disabilities.

“In the disability community, the scraps are normally given,” Katherine said.

Mend Coffee hopes to mend that.
