Roundabout feasibility study being done at controversial southern Colorado intersection [Video]

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – Colorado Springs leaders are doing a study to see if a roundabout would be feasible at an intersection where a statue has stood for years.

The General Palmer statue stands at the intersection of Nevada and Platte in downtown Colorado Springs. 11 News covered when a man lost his life at that intersection in a motorcycle crash. The intersection has sparked debate over the years. According to Colorado Springs Officials, their Platte Avenue study found about 50% of citizens who participated want the statue moved out of the intersection, while the other approximate 50% think it should stay where it is.

“It is an iconic statue in part of our downtown area, and there’s passionate people on both sides of that issue,” said City Traffic Engineer Todd Frisbie.

Frisbie says more crashes happen at that intersection than he’d typically expect at a standard four way stoplight.
