Univ. of Iowa students research top issues facing the city of Dubuque [Video]

DUBUQUE, Iowa (KCRG) – The city of Dubuque is getting some ideas on how to handle some of its top issues. It’s part of the University of Iowa’s Initiative for Sustainable Communities.

Around 100 University of Iowa undergrad and graduate students spent more than a year studying Dubuque. Everything from school attendance problems to sustainability, and the result was 17 research projects to benefit the people who work and live in Dubuque.

Zachary Slocum and Stephanie Gutierrez studied the city’s plan to improve stormwater runoff in 240 of the city’s alleys.

“The pavers do have an effect but there are additional measures that need to be taken to fix the problem,” said Slocum.

IISC Director Travis Kraus said these projects gave students a chance to see some of the biggest issues cities like Dubuque face as they start looking for jobs after graduation.
