Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) Services Process

We’re going to walk through the typical VR services process so Autistic adults and families have an idea of what to expect and professionals can share information to share with families and the people they support.

Note that each state may have some other steps involved, but these are the most commonly reported steps for VR services cycle nationally in the US.

Step 1: Apply & Determine Eligibility
An individual or their legal guardian applies for VR services.
They may meet with a counselor from VR to determine eligibility.

Step 2: Create an Individual Plan for Employment (IPE)
If the individual is determined eligible for VR services, they will create an individual plan for employment (IPE) with VR.
The IPE will specify what types of services are needed and for how long.

Step 3: Access Servicces
Individual will access the approved services to support their needs.
Services involve exploring, finding, keeping, and maintaining a job.

Step 4: Terminate/End Services
After the job has been maintained for at least 90 days, services will be terminated.
The individual or their legal guardian can re-apply or re-initiate services later if needed.
